Though this page is dominated by the same cursive, capital “L”
that was sewn to Laverne’s sweater, this is not a “Laverne
& Shirley” devotional site. Rather, it’s the website of
writer Steve Rushin, who was last seen publicly in the pages of Sports
Illustrated – bald and black-turtlenecked, looking like a refugee
from a Saturday Night Live “Sprockets” sketch.
For 19 years, Rushin practiced strict magazine monogamy, writing exclusively
for SI. But of late, he has become something of a journalistic gigolo,
his byline getting around a bit, and this site will keep you posted on
where that byline has been, and where it is going to be.
Rushin plans to post occasional essays here, pledges to update you on
upcoming projects, and promises never again – after today –
to write about himself in the third person.

Now, one of the many pieces of bad advice you'll get in life is "Think outside the box." Let me tell you: Sometimes it pays to think inside a box. And so my daughter and I lay in that box and gazed out at the dozens upon dozens of tulips my wife planted in rows last fall. They bloomed this month,tilting ever so slightly toward the sun. And I thought how remarkable it is that in nature, life wants to grow towards the light. Now I'm looking out at another crop of spring perennials - you graduates;
you graduators - and I see row upon row of you in the sublime beauty of your youth. And my only wish for you is just that: That you will keep growing towards the light.
